THE HISTORY

Having preserved its identity over time, the Casa da Capela reveals the extraordinary history of this Quinta, which dates back to the 14th century and the former presence in this region of the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. He grew up in the region with his tutor Egas Moniz (buried in the Paço de Sousa Monastery a few kilometres away) and his brother Mem Moniz.

Mem Moniz in 1350 awarded the Morgado de Velude to the nobleman Vasco Esteves de Matos, an honour that extended all the way to the River Douro.

Since then, the Quinta has belonged to the families of the Morgados de Velude, founders of the old Chapels of Santo António (1388) and Prazeres (1618), which were later integrated into the transept of the current Cinfães Parish Church.

However, it's important to emphasise that the history of this place stretches back even further, with the presence of ancient Roman roads, Roman ruins, traces of castro culture and even the Moors throughout the region.

The tombs of the founders in the Cinfães Parish Church, the coat of arms of the Morgados de Velude family and the ancient cobbled road next to the Quinta.
